Cardiopulmonary Applications

Cardiopulmonary Applications SCC-6001

According to the CDC, in the United States alone, there are 7.1 million survivors of myocardial infarction (MI) and 4.9 million people living with congestive heart failure (CHF). Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States. The incidence of heart failure as well as hospitalization, and mortality rates continue to rise despite recent advances in medicine. For patients in the late stages of lung disease, transplantation is sometimes the only viable therapeutic option. However, organ availability is limited and rejection presents an additional challenge. Regenerative medicine aims to restore the function of failing organs and tissues for patients with serious injuries or chronic disease such as cardiovascular disorders and lung disease.

The use of regenerative medicine and stem cells in patients suffering from cardiovascular disorders or lung disease has shown success over the years and it is anticipated that these therapies will be further refined to improve success rates in the coming years.

In this subspecialty course of the Advanced Stem Cell Education Program, lecturers will discuss innovative research efforts in the field of regenerative medicine directed towards cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases. As with all subspecialty courses, ASTEP includes a stem cell essentials package which includes: ten biology of stem cells lectures, and three lectures based on the regulation of stem cell therapies in addition to the topic specific lectures of this course
